Anyone who has pegged their expectations at a slightly higher level about Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol cannot be faulted or can be questioned. The reasons for such high expectations are manifold. First and foremost its a Mohanlal film who is returning back after a string of box office successes with one of them going all the way in becoming a magnanimous hit of epic proportion. The second reason is that MVT is the second venture of director Jibu Jacob who shot to fame through Vellimoonga. Last but not the least is Mohanlal being paired with actress Meena as on screen couple after the hugely successful Drishyam. Both the actors have success history as a pair and share good on screen chemistry between them.

Whether MVT is worth those expectations and is the movie worth a watch is the next big question that one is naturally bound to ask. I would answer that in the affirmative. A pure family film that has a steady flow, MVT doesn't have any unexpected twist or surprises in the storyline but the treatment makes it a watchable one. Spreading a bucket full of romance, the movie lay emphasis on love and caring between couples that should pave the way for the next generation to inbibe that when they start their own life.

The film doesn't have a strong story with lot of depth. It just have a threadbare plot line and goes about narrating it without much confusion and complexity. Ulahannan who is Secretary in Panchayat office is married to Aniyamma. They have a daughter Gini who is a plus two student and a son Jerry who is younger to the girl. Relationship between Ulahannan and Aniyamma was missing some spark and the couple were going through a rough patch as husband and wife. Whether they can bring back love and romance into their life and is their a solution to their problem? To get an answer, you need to watch the movie.

At some point of the film, the character of Aniyamma says to her husband that the beauty of a wife lies in the love and care her husband showers. Another moment has Ulahannan making a statement that "My wife is my life" which is the tag line for the movie. The story and the moments in the movie are structured based on these. So naturally family is the target audience and in my view, MVR is suitable for all but more so for real life couples who have something in it as a takeaway.

Going more deeper in the movie, the first half has its moments but is not that attractive. The pre-intermission portions are watchable but its the latter half that brings more energy and purpose into the movie. There is humor in limited dose in the first that has some lagging and irritating scenes as well. The scene where Indulekha gets introduced and her subsequent meeting with Ulahannaan was overly dramatic due to poorly written dialogue. But as I said, the film recover from all of that and land safely as a pure and simple family oriented product.

Mohanlal is the backbone of the film and it was a role which is tailor made for him. With so much ease he effortlessly gets into the thick of the character and makes an impression. I read in media an interview of the producer of this movie wherein Sofia Paul saying that after she read the screenplay, the immediate actor that came to her mind to portray the role of Ulahannaan was Mohanlal. It was a perfect statement.

Meena shares a great onscreen chemistry with Mohanlal and as always the pair clicked in MVT also. There is a long line up of supporting actors. Among them Anoop Menon, Srinda, Alencier Lay, Shajon and Bindu Panicker were the most notable ones. Aima Rosy Sebastian and Sanoop Santhosh as children of Ulahannaan and Aniyamma were good castings. Suraj Venjaramudu, Joy Mathew, Sharafudeen and Sudheer Karaman also are part of the cast.

Camera work is decent enough and have captured the beauty of Kuttanad successfully. Background score by Bijipal was apt for the mood. Music from M Jayachandran and Bijipal were on the average territory. Editing was also quite good that didn't affect the flowness. On the making side, Jibu Jacob just follow what is expected while dealing in this sort of subject and does his job well.

This is one film which is primarily a family oriented one with ligher and simple moments. I wouldn't call it a complete entertainer but the movie has something in it to keep you engaged and glued to the screen for its two and a half hour running time. If you are looking for a sweet and simple lighthearted story and watch a movie without much noise, fuss and tension then Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol is the right choice for you.
