Who doesn’t love traveling? And what makes it a perfect trip is not where you travel but how and with whom you have hit the roads. We have decided to take our own journey through 20 road movies ever made. While some may involve laughs and gags like Todd Phillips’ Due Date, the others are quite serious like Imtiaz Ali’s Highway, yet captivating.
This 2012 Kurdish movie is written and directed by Karzan Kader. Set in the1990s, the movie revolves around two homeless boys, Zana and Dana who set out to America to meet Superman to tell him all their problems. Despite not having money, passport or any transportation means, the story takes us through an interesting journey of how the duo try to cross the borders from Iran to reach America.
2) The Motorcycle Diaries
Directed by Walter Salles and written by Jose Rivera, The Motorcycle Diaries is a biopic about a dream motorcycle journey (8,000 km) and written memoir of the 23-year-old Ernesto Guevara, famously known as Che Guevara. The plot of the movie revolves around a future revolutionary (who is due to complete his medical degree) and his best friend Alberto Granado (a biochemist), who travel 5,000 miles through South America on their way to a leper colony in Peru. Their initial method of transport is Granado's dilapidated Norton 500 motorcycle christened La Poderosa meaning The Mighty One.
3) Midnight Run
A brilliantly bickering road trip movie this is. A Mafia and the FBI on their long cross-country trip to Los Angeles get to know each other and they build up a strange friendship. Directed by Martin Brest, the two-hour movie was released in 1988.
4) Planes, Trains and Automobiles
The American comedy film written, produced and directed by John Hughes is about a man who tries to get home for thanksgiving dinner with his family. However, his only companion during the journey is a clumsy shower ring salesman.
5) Rain Man
This road-trip movie is about an autistic savant and his immature brother trying to inherit a property left behind by their father. Though the movie is about stealing the inheritance from the other half brother, it is also about a cross-country odyssey of love and self-discovery.
6) Leap Year
Directed by Anand Tucker, the film follows frustrated Anna Brady who decides to fly to Dublin, Ireland to propose to her boyfriend of many years, Jeremy Sloane on February 29. Being a Leap Day, he cannot refuse owing to the country's tradition that a man who is proposed to on Leap Day must accept. However, her plans are disturbed by a series of unlikely events and are further complicated when she meets inn keeper Declan O'Callaghan, who drives her down to Dublin.
7) Hangover 3
Fast-forward two years from the events in Bangkok and Alan has not matured. But after his father dies of a heart attack while lecturing him about his latest antics, his brother-in-law Doug realises that he has not been taking his ADHD medication, and persuades Alan to attend rehab. Alan's only condition is that 'the Wolfpack' - his friends Phil Wenneck and Stu Price accompany him to the facility in Arizona. The result is a road trip that they are unlikely to forget, as they become entangled in the politics of a gold heist.
8) Into the Wild
Christopher McCandless, after graduating from University abandons all his possessions and gives his entire $24,000 savings account to charity before he hitchhikes to Alaska. The story is all about how along the way, he encounters a series of characters that shape his life.
9) The Hitch-Hiker
Two American husbands while in Baja California, give a lift to a hitch-hiker, who turns out to be a wanted killer. The killer forces them to drive him further down into Mexico setting the whole mood in a thrilling adventure.
10) Due Date
Architect Peter Highman is flying home to Los Angeles to be with his wife Sarah for the birth of their first child. However, both Peter and his fellow passenger, an aspiring actor Ethan Tremblay, are kicked off the plane. Peter, who doesn’t have money or a driver’s license is forced to accept Ethan's offer of a shared car ride to Los Angeles. The story then is all about how they get to Los Angeles just on time.
11) The Road Within
A young man suffering from Tourette syndrome and his girl, Maria together steal a car and sets out on a life changing road trip to deliver the ashes of his mother to the ocean.
12) Little Miss Sunshine
Directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris have nailed it in captivating the audience with this easy-go chick-flick. The story is all about a family determined to get their young daughter into the finals of a beauty pageant and how they take a cross-country trip in their VW bus.
13) Everybody’s fine
Frank Goode who lives by himself in Elmira, NY, is a widower with heart trouble. Against his personal doctor’s advices, Frank sets off on an impromptu road trip to reunite with each of his grown children settled in various places.
14) Road Trip
This American road-comedy film written by Todd Phillips and Scot Armstrong and directed by Phillips is all about four friends, who take off on a road trip from New York to Austin to retrieve an illicit tape mistakenly mailed to a girl friend.
A dramatic portrayal of the power of Stockholm syndrome, the movie shows how a kidnapped girl forms a close bond with her captor and wishes the journey with him never ends. During the journey she travels with the kidnapper on a truck through unknown routes to her.
16) Riding solo to the top of the world
The movie released in 2006 is a documentary of a unique experience of a lonesome traveler filmmaker Gaurav Jani. Jaini documents himself on a solo motorcycle journey from Mumbai to one of the remotest places in the World, the Changthang Plateau, in Ladakh, bordering China.
This action-thriller stars Anushka Sharma, Neil Bhoopalam and Darshan Kumar. NH10 is the story of a young upper middle class couple on their way for a weekend getaway. Along the way, a seemingly small incident turns into a harrowing experience and a story of survival and courage.
The 2010 Hindi romance movie is about a couple who attempts to suicide but fails. They finally decide to go on a road trip and then kill themselves on the New Year’s Eve.
19) Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi
Two best buddies, Kasi and Suni, hit the roads to Nagaland in search of the former’s girlfriend, Assi. The two engineering graduates, journey from Wayanand on two bullets all the way to Nagaland. Rather than a high-adrenaline adventure, the 2013 movie, directed by Sameer Thahir and written by Hashir Mohame, is a journey that celebrates love and romance. The film was shot at real locations across seven Indian states including Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, West Bengal, Orissa, Nagaland and Sikkim.
Inspired by an incident that took place in Chennai, this 2011 movie directed by Rajesh Pillai and written by brothers Bobby and Sanjay, is an emotional thriller based on a road trip from Kochi to Pallakad. The story revolves around multiple people and their stories and how they are interconnected to each other. A family agrees to donate the heart of their only son to save a life of a girl in Pallakad. What keeps the audience gripped on to their seat is how a traffic constable donned by Sreenivasan 150 kms to Pallakad under two hours to reach the hospital safe with the heart.
