A number of films can be made out of a common theme and that is the beauty of
films and film-making. The best example being the theme ‘Love’, which even
after years, still holds a genuine position in creative minds.
Today, we are going to discuss about a different theme. In fact, three quality Malayalam films, which handled the same theme but still, went on to create a lasting impression in the minds of the viewers.
Flashback to 2012
The year 2012 was a good one for Malayalam cinema, considering the fact that the particular year witnessed the arrival of some brilliant films, which in one way or the other led to a change in Malayalam film industry. The new generation wave had started to hit the shores of Kerala and it did pave way for some good films.
It was in the same year that all the three movies under consideration got released. All the three films were high on quality and more importantly, they were box office hits as well. Yes, we are talking about the films Diamond necklace, Ayalum Njanum Thammil and Usthad Hotel (Watched Ustad Hotel? Rate.), which released in the year 2012.
Self-Discovery Or Self-Realization
This theme has been used umpteen number of times in Indian cinema, but the above mentioned films did have a stand of their own while narrating this theme.
Usthad Hotel was about a young guy who dreams to become a chef and settle in a place abroad India. It is then that his Uppappa enters the scene and lets him know the real essence of cooking and the importance of feeding the people in need.
Ayalum Njanum Thammil dealt with the life of a doctor named Ravi Tharakan. The film showcased how the influence of a person named Dr Samuel evolves him to a good doctor,
On
the other hand, Diamond Necklace dealt with a slightly different theme. The
film was about a guy named Arun, who is a spendthrift and holds less emotion
towards other people. How there comes a change in his attitude and life has
been shown prominently in the film.

The Navigators
All these three films were about the lead characters but each of these films had a character, who takes the role of a navigator, leading the central character in the right direction.
In Ayalum Njanum Thammil (How much do you rate Ayaalum Njanum Thammil?), the character played by Prathap Pothen takes Ravi Tharakan in the right direction. In fact, it is Ravi Tharakan’s valuable time with Dr Samuel that brings about a change in his attitude towards the doctor profession. Lal Jose and Bobby-Sanjay have effectively shown us the value of being a doctor through the film.
Coming to Usthad Hotel, we simply can’t forget the character Usthad, played by legendary actor Thilakan. Usthad is one such person, who knows the real essence of cooking. In fact, Usthad never teaches Faizi about that, but still makes him realize the same through certain set of events.
Whereas, in Diamond Necklace (How much do you rate Diamond Necklace?), a host of characters play the role of navigators. Up to some extent, the characters played by Samvrutha Sunil, Anusree and Gauthami Nair brings about a change in the attitude of Arun, especially in the relationship angle. The character played by Sreenivasan helps Arun realize the importance of relationship and near and dear ones.
Turning Points
In all the three films, there are certain scenes and events that act as a turning point in the lives of the protagonists.
In Ayalum Njanum Thammil, there is a sequence when the protagonist understands that the life of a human is much important than petty vengeance. Dr Ravi Tharakan realizes that through Dr Samuel in the film.
Similarly, in Usthad Hotel, Faizi goes to Tamil Nadu upon the special request of Uppappa and there he learns the importance of serving the food to the people in need.
In Diamond necklace, a series of events make Arun a better person. He understands the importance of love and how much Rajasree loved him during the climax sequences of the film.
Box Office Success
The best part is in the fact that all the three films emerged as hits at the box office. The films did grow with word of mouth and entered the list of hit movies of 2012.
