If you ask me to name my favourite Gautham Menon movie, I have no hesitation to pick Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaayaa which is right up there on top of the list followed by Vettayaadu Vilayaadu and Vaaranam Aayiram. VTV actually gave a different and new makeover to its hero Silambarasan. Again if you tell me to choose STR's best film, it would again be VTV. Now after a long gap of six years, Gautham Menon and Silambarasan unite (hope I am correct on this) for yet another movie that too with a long title which is a normal thing. Achcham Enbadhu Madamaiyada is the duo's latest offering to the audience which has a treatment quite familiar to what the director is famous for.
When it comes to picturising romance, GVM is one of the best in business. True to his form and track record, the film has a beautiful and lovely side of love and romance in the background and at a particular juncture, AEM takes a drastic turn into the action and thriller mode setting up the pace to the next level. Love, romance, action, revenge, helplessness and of course that trademark style of the director is all packed in a neat bottle, thats how I would put Achcham Enbadhu Madamaiyada.
The story as per the title credits in the beginning of the movie says its inspired from a moment from The Godfather. The protagonist played by STR quite interestingly doesn't have a name which is only revealed at the fag end of the movie. He gets attracted to Leela who is his sister's friend. Their romance develop in the usual colorful way just like any other GVM movie and takes a total U-turn through the middle. How the two of them face these unexpected situations in their life is what that forms the remainder of the plot.
The movie is packaged, structured and presented with a mix of conventional and unorthodox style. What and how that is done cannot be revealed since that would break the suspense part and lessen the thrill of people who are yet to watch. One can see the familiar pattern of sequences that we see in all the GVM movies especially with the case of romance which has been given a silent but cool and breezy tone to it.
At no point does the film makes you bored and once the movie shift its gear to the thriller mode, we are literally kept on the edge of the seat for the most part with good pace in the screenplay. That's a plus and a big achievement. One would find slightly disappointed on how the movie was wound up in a rather abrupt fashion leaving space for questions and logic. But that's a blemish which one can ignore considering the overall positives that the film has on offer to us.
Silambarasan enact the role just like the way it was supposed to. Whenever he is part of a Gautham Menon film, STR is a different man and their two films amply justify that. He has a role that passes through different phases and plays both of them with an emotional touch, style and coolness. When things go worse, the tension the couple were having was very much displayed on his face. Manjima Mohan gets a good debut in Tamil with a role that has enough screen presence. Baba Sehgal as the police officer was apt while Daniel Balaji doesn't get something big to perform.
Music and background score plays a big part in elevating the mood matching the scenes. A.R.Rahman has blended and given score that no one can complain about. All of the songs appear in the first half especially when the romance between the lead pair develops and I should say the songs were cool and peppy creating the exact mood required for those lovely moments. Decent visuals is another positive side mainly attributed to beautifully done cinematography. Editing was spot on.
What all things you expect from a GVM movie is there in store for the audience. Its a mix of love, romance, music, action, revenge and thrills stuffed well and in the right proportion. Nee thaanay enn pon vasantham, one of Gautham's earlier film had an excess tone of romance plus melodrama that backfired but here the case is not so. I don't think Achcham Enbadhu Madamaiyada will disappoint you and personally for me it was an entertaining, rewarding and fruitful experience.
