More than an year ago, a short film ‘Ramaniyechiyude Namathil’ stole the imagination of anyone who watched it. One common thing everyone chanted after watching it was about the case when these makers try an actual feature film. It is finally here, produced by the hero Asif Ali himself. Kavi Uddeschatu is a good entertainer, but which had in it the essence for much more excitement in the range of ‘Ramaniyechiyude Namathil’.
The movie carries a lot of elements for an out and out entertainer, a story carved out for a gripping watch, exciting performances, good music and visuals. These factors can satisfy the thirst of any viewer for entertainment, but the fact remains that these were not at its purest when translated onscreen. But the debutant director duo deserves that allowance after getting so many things right.
The movie is set in the backdrop of a volley ball crazy village, Allimala. It initially took its time to take the viewers for a tour of the village and introduce the characters, still having moments of its own. The gears shifted as Kavi slowly stepped on to the main story and it never really looked back. The characters were designed very well with good naturality. Comedy which was evident throughout the movie, never really crossed the line of overdoing it. In fact it was the one liners here and there, performed well by the cast that helped to present certain clichés well and kept the interest of the viewers going when the movie did not pick up in the expected manner. Even when the story revolved around exciting aspects like sports, love and betting, Kavi uddeshichatu did not have a watertight grip on the viewer. The encounters between the hero and heroine were presented very nicely, resulting in a well shaped love story. Volleyball has a very pivotal role in the movie. The games were planned and scripted very well resulting in an engaging climax. While the action in the games impressed at times, it very often felt repetitive and simple. The title of the movie ends up both apt and attractive as only the hero Jimmy and the viewers are clear of his intensions.
One highlight of Kavi is the excellent way almost all the cast have performed imparting good amount of fun into the movie. The directors deserve the credit for that result. Asif Ali lead the way with one of his best performances in recent times. His free flow acting carried energy and helped in making Kavi exciting. One added aspect to his acting is his screen presence, making Jimmy a very likeable character. One factor that kept the movie going was the impressive performance of the actors who did the role of the hero’s friends, each of them leaving an impression of their own. The heroine Anju Kurian did a very good job, complementing Asif Ali really well. Biju Menon almost stole the show whenever he was in it. Lena too comes up with a graceful performance.
Music by Jakes Bejoy was a plus point with certain BGMs contributing greatly to the feel of the movie. The beautiful song ‘Innaleyum’ helped very much in the transition of the love in Kavi. At the same time, there were places where the BGMs seemed slightly out of place or overused.Kavi uddeshichatu has the best of intentions to be a clean entertainer. While the debutant directors and the writer deserve applause for the end product, it is quite evident that there is so much room for improvement. It is definitely a good idea to watch Kavi Uddeshicatu if one wants to put their money on a light and entertaining ride.
